Why would someone want to major in English?

First, reading, watching, listening to, and otherwise experiencing great art is compelling and rewarding!

Second, English majors work in every single job field! No, really! Every single industry you can name employs people who must read, write, comprehend, analyze, organize, and communicate. And that's what English majors learn how to do -- read different types of textual and visual imagery, write in multimodal-multimedia environments, comprehend complex information structures, analyze textual and visual evidence, organize words and all forms of data to emphasize patterns and describe relationships, and communicate all of this complex information from one group of people to another in emerging forms of media and discourse.
